KAMAZ’s Strategic move in Russia’s Automotive Sector

The head of KAMAZ, Sergey Kogogin, outlined the company’s continued involvement in the Moskvich initiative as a technology partner and indicated that a decision would be reached by mid-2023 regarding the project’s organizational structure, capitalization, and the entity responsible for passenger-focused developments, including the Atom electric vehicle. He clarified that the KAMAZ name would not be carried over to this venture, emphasizing a separation of brand from the new passenger projects.

According to Kogogin, KAMAZ will not operate in the passenger car manufacturing sector directly. Yet he noted that in the current market climate, such initiatives carry a social dimension by expanding domestic options and supporting local industry growth, rather than pursuing pure profit alone.

“There is potential for AVTOVAZ to produce up to half a million vehicles given their scale and capabilities, but the modern consumer is demanding choice and quality,” Kogogin observed. He also highlighted KAMAZ’s commitment to electrification, signaling ongoing investments in electric propulsion technologies and a broader objective to restore a market balance in which domestic production supplies a significant share of vehicles, aiming toward a target of 80 percent domestically produced goods.
