Itelma research and production enterprise is set to begin supplying a new electric power steering unit to AvtoVAZ for integration on the conveyor line. Cited by a Russian newspaper report, the upgraded steering column is slated for installation on Lada Vesta and Lada Iskra models, signaling a strategic enhancement to the VAZ product lineup.
Among the clear advantages highlighted by Itelma are a lighter overall unit weight of 8.8 kg compared with 10.5–11 kg for competing systems, the inclusion of an integrated electronic control unit within the engine module, and a built-in angular steering shaft location sensor. These features collectively aim to improve steering feel, reduce unsprung mass, and simplify vehicle electronics architecture, according to the communication from Itelma.
The new electric power steering has already undergone the necessary testing, and shipments to AvtoVAZ are expected to commence in the near term, as reported. This follows a period of collaboration where Itelma provided its technology to support the next generation of steering systems in VAZ vehicles.
Previously, it was announced that AvtoVAZ began mass production of the Lada Vesta with the new 1.8-liter Evo engine delivering 122 horsepower, paired with an automatic transmission. The integration of this engine family marks a shift toward higher torque availability and refined drivability across the Vesta model range.
The enhanced powertrain sees the new engine and automatic transmission, specifically a continuously variable transmission, integrated into Vesta family models across all body styles. To accommodate these upgrades, the automaker undertook modernization of the fuel and braking systems, ensuring compatibility with the revised powertrain and maintaining robust safety and efficiency standards.
In related developments this year, it was noted that AvtoVAZ resumed equipping Lada Vesta cars with cruise control, a feature to be installed on vehicles already in the base configuration. The reintroduction of cruise control aligns with broader efforts to raise convenience and modernity across the brand.
Earlier reports also mentioned a potential defect in one option for the Lada Niva Travel, highlighting ongoing quality inspections within the model lineup as the company continues to refine its production quality controls and respond to market feedback.
