Iran Khodro unveils the Tara EV sedan and outlines planned capabilities

Iran Khodro presented the Tara EV, an electric version of its Tara sedan, which the company intends to market in Russia. The reveal took place in the brand’s home country, Iran, where most of the vehicle’s key technologies are expected to be developed and refined locally. The event highlighted Iran Khodro’s ambition to deepen domestic expertise by controlling major components within the country.

A recurring challenge echoed from Iran and many other markets is the lack of widespread charging infrastructure. In Iran, as in several regions, the grid for supporting fully electric fleets is still developing, which can influence how early adopters experience the Tara EV and other electric vehicles.

The Tara EV is equipped with an electric motor rated at 160 horsepower and 300 newton-meters of torque, delivering a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of about 9 seconds and a top speed around 140 km/h. The vehicle is paired with a 45 kWh battery. According to khodrobank.com, a single charge is projected to cover roughly 300 kilometers. Charging performance is described as up to 10 hours on a standard domestic outlet, while a fast charger can replenish the battery in approximately 30 minutes.

Iran Khodro envisions a domestic supply chain for Tara EV batteries and electric motors, with production slated to begin next year. The plan foresees manufacturing about 5,000 Tara EVs annually, with taxi fleets identified as the initial market segment for deployment and evaluation of real-world performance and reliability in commercial use.

For Russia, the company’s current roadmap centers on the petrol version of Tara. Should an electric variant reach the Russian market, it could become a meaningful asset in the competitive landscape alongside the Lada Vesta NG, which is scheduled to launch in Tolyatti in March 2023. At present, there is no announced plan to offer an electric version of the renewed Vesta.

  • In parallel, AVTOVAZ has begun electrifying portions of its lineup. The electric Largus EV is listed as a development priority and is linked to the Izhevsk Automobile Plant as part of one of AVTOVAZ’s three new projects aimed at expanding electrification across its range.
  • Further reading about these developments can be found in industry writeups on Odnoklassniki by readers and enthusiasts who follow the brand closely.
