A significant part of the components powering the domestic auto sector comes from abroad, influencing the competitive position of Russian plants today. Yet this pattern mirrors the broader global auto industry, where advantages and dependencies shift from one region to another. The economy benefits from diverse sourcing, and while self-sufficiency has its appeal, collaboration with international partners remains a practical reality for most manufacturers. Import dependence does not imply that the Russian car industry relies solely on imports.
Does Russia produce its own consumables and auto parts?
fuel and lubricants
Starting with the essentials, gas stations across the country, including those formerly dominated by foreign brands, offer petrol and diesel produced in Russian refineries located in Yaroslavl, Kapotnya, Ryazan, Ufa, Ukhta, and Perm.
High-quality and modern motor oils are manufactured by companies such as Lukoil, Gazpromneft, Rosneft, and Obninskorgsintez (Sintek). Numerous domestic producers also supply coolants, windshield washer fluids, and other automotive chemicals, all meeting rigorous quality standards.
Electronic components
Within the country, electronic components are produced by firms such as Itelma. Household generators, starters, window lift modules, and fuel pumps are available, enabling maintenance of vehicles without reliance on imports for these items. However, not all parts fall into this category; some plastic components, suspension parts, and interior fittings are still sourced abroad.
There is no shortage of high-quality oil filters produced domestically.
Consumables
The so-called secondary market includes car filters and brake pads, with many well-known brands represented in Russia. While the vintage car segment remains in demand due to its heritage and performance, the market often reflects higher prices that can be a concern for buyers.
Sanctions have introduced a new challenge: luxury and premium brands are increasingly counterfeited, making it harder for ordinary consumers to distinguish genuine products from fakes. Some lesser-known foreign brands may not deliver the expected quality, masking themselves behind attractive packaging.
