The vehicle carries a history closely tied to the famed physicist, who relied on reliable transportation during pivotal years of his remarkable career. Hawking reportedly used a 1988 Volkswagen Caravelle GL 112 as a practical partner in both daily life and notable occasions, including his 1995 wedding. He kept the car for several years after purchase, continuing to drive it until 1999 when his health began to impact mobility. After Hawking’s passing, the vehicle remained in the family and was entrusted to his nephew, who has owned it since 2003 and now places it in the hands of new custodians through the auction.
