Adverse weather disrupted traffic on the Georgian Military Road, causing a temporary halt to truck movement. This update comes from the Telegram channel of the North Ossetian emergency authorities.

The notification states that heavy vehicles are prohibited from traveling eastbound toward Russia in the stretch between Vladikavkaz and the Lars settlement, starting at 08:50 on December 22, 2023, and continuing until further notice.

The restriction was attributed to worsening weather conditions in Georgian territory, concerns about safe passage, and the need to follow recommendations issued by Georgian border guards.

The Georgian Military Road serves as a crucial land link not only for Georgia but also for Armenia to the Russian Federation, underscoring its strategic importance for regional mobility and trade.

In a related development, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended a ceremony marking the opening of the M-12 Vostok highway, a project that extends the country’s highway network toward Kazan.

The M-12 Vostok corridor will connect Moscow to Kazan, Yekaterinburg, and Tyumen, spanning approximately 1,980 kilometers. Officials project that key extensions will push the route to Yekaterinburg in 2024 and to Tyumen in 2025, integrating the corridor into a broader international route branded as Russia.

Within the initial segment, the Moscow to Kazan portion of the M-12 measures about 810 kilometers, establishing a major artery that accelerates domestic transit and enhances interregional connectivity.

Earlier statements from Deputy Prime Minister Khusnullin touched on plans to construct a bypass around Mariupol, reflecting ongoing efforts to optimize traffic flows and reduce congestion on traditional corridors while maintaining safe and reliable routes for freight and passengers.
