Chinese car brands gain ground in Russia’s used and new car markets
Avito Auto’s January–February 2023 analysis shows Chinese manufacturers holding a growing share of both new and used car sales. The share of Chinese models in the new car market reached 32 percent, while in the used car market it stood at 2.4 percent. In the previous year these figures were 9.3 percent for new cars and 2 percent for used cars, illustrating a rapid shift in consumer preferences toward Chinese brands.
On the demand side, Chinese brands experienced a notable surge: new car demand rose by 121 percent year over year, and demand for used cars increased by 19.8 percent. The same period also reveals price trends in Russia, with the average price of a new car around 2,780,000 rubles and roughly 1,150,000 rubles for the secondary market. These figures come from Avito Auto’s supply-and-demand metrics for January–February 2023, which provide a snapshot of consumer behavior and market pricing during that window.
The five most popular new-models, as identified by Avito Auto, were led by Omoda C5 with a 13.4 percent share of demand, followed by Haval Jolion at 12.4 percent, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro at 11.3 percent, Geely Coolray at 6.7 percent, and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max at 4.7 percent. These rankings underscore how certain Chinese brands and models are resonating strongly with buyers in the Russian market, particularly in the compact-to-mid SUV segment.
In the used-car category, the leading models by demand included Chery Tiggo (T11) at 8.7 percent, Lifan Solano at 7.1 percent, Chery Amulet at 5 percent, Geely Emgrand EC7 at 4.8 percent, and Lifan X60 at 4.3 percent. The data indicate a sustained appetite for affordable, feature-rich Chinese options in the certified pre-owned and general used-car markets, signaling ongoing competition with domestic and other import brands.
These shifts reflect broader consumer trends toward value-oriented vehicles, robust after-sales networks, and growing familiarity with Chinese brands across the automotive landscape. The statistical snapshot from Avito Auto’s January–February 2023 market review helps explain why dealers are increasingly stocking Chinese models and why buyers are considering them as viable alternatives to traditional brands.
