With age and higher mileage, a car can start throwing unexpected curveballs. The Nivac, at around 155,000 kilometers, began acting up in a way no one could predict. It suddenly stalled while driving and refused to restart. The observer checked the spark plugs and the fuel pressure in the rail, and everything seemed fine. The next step was to investigate the control unit directly.
The culprit turned out to be the plastic cover shielding the electronic board. Water had sneaked into the cabin through the air intake and landed on the ECU, causing the malfunction.
Cause of malfunction
The ECU sits to the right side of the front panel, under the dashboard, behind the glove box, just below the heater motor. Water leaked into the cabin via the air intake and reached the controller, leading to a failure.
Repair
A skilled technician cleaned the board and replaced the damaged radio components. The job cost about five thousand rubles. This saved at least ten thousand rubles on buying a new ECU.
- Seven years and about two hundred thousand rubles were spent on repairing the Nivac.
