A new entry from Changan is shaping up to be a true long-distance workhorse. The upcoming model is rumored to exceed 5.4 meters in length, a step beyond the current Hunter pickup that already measures up to 5.4 meters. Changan plans to introduce its larger sibling, aiming to expand its footprint in the pickup segment across North America and Canada as well as in the broader market outside Russia.
Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports that the forthcoming model will carry the name Sniper. The publication also notes that the manufacturer has released initial sketches and a few highlighted features to give a sense of its design direction and capabilities.
Preliminary specs place the Sniper at 5600 millimeters in length, 1930 millimeters in width, and 1865 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 3430 millimeters. These dimensions position it as a substantial pickup, offering generous cabin space and a robust stance that can appeal to both work needs and everyday driving in North American markets.
In the special Pro Edition, the Sniper will gain a distinctive body kit and a set of accessories that push width to 1945 millimeters and height to 1875 millimeters. Across all variants, the overall body length remains 1850 millimeters and the body width stays at 1595 millimeters. The side walls reach a height of exactly half a meter, contributing to a practical cargo design and easier loading and unloading scenarios in real-world use.
Under the hood, the Sniper is expected to offer both diesel and petrol options. The diesel variant could deliver a modest 163 horsepower, while the petrol alternative is anticipated to produce a more confident 233 horsepower from a 2-liter turbocharged engine. Both powertrains are planned to be turbocharged, with drive configurations that can include rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. This flexibility aims to keep initial pricing approachable while delivering capable performance for varied terrains and use cases.
Given the current gap in the Russian market for pickups and the limited competition within the segment, industry observers speculate that the Sniper may appear in Changan showrooms sooner rather than later. The vehicle’s size and power options suggest a strategic approach to attract buyers who require a capable, modern pickup without stepping into premium pricing.
