A car assembled in 2022 loses a year when it is sold in 2023, which means that at the time of sale it also drops in value because of that unused year, explains automotive expert Dmitry Slavnov.
Looking ahead, this dynamic may influence the asking price when a vehicle changes hands if the seller cannot prove the car’s age by documents alone.
The expert notes that scammers are keen to exploit this situation, showing vehicles at attractive discounts, below dealer prices, and insisting that the car is from the previous year. Their goal is to draw buyers into unofficial showrooms, where the vehicles are then pitched at higher prices.
Bargaining is appropriate
When purchasing, buyers can still negotiate the price with an official dealership. One practical approach is to bring a paint thickness gauge. Even brand-new cars can arrive with minor finish flaws from transit, such as tiny scratches or stone chips kicked up by tires. Dealers may use these marks to present the vehicle as a showroom sample.
If the car has tinted windows, a thickness gauge can reveal this detail, giving the buyer additional leverage to negotiate a lower price. Such disclosures help ensure transparency and fairness in the deal.
