Yang Heitzeer, vice president of the National Automobile Union, notes that a car fire often arrives without warning, and the signals of danger are not always obvious at first glance. In the cabin, a steady, even if faint, aroma of smoke can become stronger over time, and the dashboard lights may flicker in a way that signals trouble on the electrical system. These indicators are among the primary signs that a fire could be approaching, and recognizing them early can be crucial for safety.
“There are many smells inside a vehicle that mingle with each other, but when one odor becomes constant and noticeable, even if slight, that is a solid reason to seek diagnostic service,” advised the expert, emphasizing a cautious approach to unusual cabin scents and evolving electrical cues.
During winter, spotting the onset of a fire is especially tricky. Drivers often misinterpret smoke rising from beneath the hood as steam or condensation from melting snow. In truth, it may indicate that insulation and wiring are already suffering from short circuits, with heat building up around critical connections. This misreading can delay crucial action and escalate risk.
Similarly, a flashing dashboard can be mistaken for a low battery or dirty terminals. Yet, under the surface, it may reveal a wiring fault that renders the vehicle unsafe to drive. If such indicators appear, the prudent move is to shut off the engine and arrange towing rather than forcing the car to move to a service site or home.
Experts warn that modern cars use highly flammable materials within their construction, and once a fire starts, it can engulf the interior within 7 to 10 minutes. Aimed at personal safety, this reality underscores that fighting such a blaze with a small extinguisher from the outside is not effective and can put occupants at greater risk. The recommended course is to evacuate calmly and call emergency services and roadside assistance when possible.
