Chinese automaker BYD plans to introduce a new crossover that draws visual inspiration from the German icon Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The company has shared that the model will be called Equation Leopard 5, signaling a bold move into the rugged, boxy SUV segment.
According to automobile house com cn, the crossover is set to debut in China in August 2023. Design notes describe a broad grille that forms a single sweep with the headlights, a flat windshield, sizable exterior mirrors, roof rails, and a spare wheel integrated into the tailgate. The vehicle is expected to measure roughly five meters in length with a wheelbase near 2.8 meters, underscoring its substantial, imposing stance on the road.
Under the skin, BYD reportedly equips the Equation Leopard 5 with a hybrid drivetrain. Electric motors will drive both axles, while the internal combustion engine functions primarily to recharge the battery. The combined output is said to be around 544 horsepower, delivering a powerful and smooth acceleration profile. Real-world range is claimed to approach 1200 km, highlighting the potential for extended travel between charges according to official projections.
