A Belarusian car owner has modified a Volga so it can run not only on gasoline but also on wood. He accomplished this by installing a gas generator in the trunk area.

To start the vehicle, the operator engages the ignition fan, lights a kerosene torch, and then ignites the gas generator. Wood fuel is fed into a dedicated tank; as it burns, gas is released and passes through several filtration stages to remove impurities before it reaches the engine.

On smooth pavement, the wood-fueled Volga can reach speeds up to 100 km/h. Fuel efficiency is reported as about 1.5 bags per 100 kilometers.

The inventor also explored a novel use for the gas generator: smoking lard. Clean alder wood, free of bark, was chosen and a fat-collection vessel was employed to keep carcinogens from entering the finished dish. The result, according to the maker, was a tasty fat.
