AvtoVAZ announced plans to unveil the initial prototype of its Lada e-Largus electric vehicle in Izhevsk during 2022, according to RIA Novosti with confirmation from Maxim Sokolov, the head of the company. The company indicated that the first prototype has already been completed, and that just a few days before the New Year a presentation would take place in the capital of Udmurtia, delivering a clear message about the project’s progress and expectations for the electric passenger car segment in Russia.
Management highlighted that the production of an electric car based on the Lada Largus platform would start with a high degree of localization at AvtoVAZ’s Izhevsk facilities. This move aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependence on external components, reflecting the broader strategy to build electrified vehicles within Russia. Earlier reports indicated a shift in manufacturing priorities, with the Lada Vesta assembly transitioning from Izhevsk to AvtoVAZ’s principal production hub in Tolyatti, signaling a realignment of capacity to support new product lines and future electrification programs.
In November, a look at the electric Lada Largus appeared in imagery captured inside the Zhigulevskaya Dolina industrial park in Tolyatti, where the vehicle was showcased in photos and videos as part of ongoing development efforts. Meanwhile, the gasoline version of the Largus was still scheduled to be produced and sold into 2023, illustrating a parallel roadmap where traditional models continue alongside the emerging electric variants as the company navigates the transition toward electrification and localized manufacturing.
