AVTOVAZ Announces 2023 SKD Production Plan for Lada at St. Petersburg
In 2023, AVTOVAZ outlines a roadmap to manufacture around 10,000 Lada vehicles at its St. Petersburg facility using the SKD method. This approach focuses on semi-knocked-down assembly, enabling quicker market entry and greater flexibility in adjusting the product lineup as demand evolves. The plan reflects AVTOVAZ’s intent to optimize the supply chain while maintaining rigorous quality control during the initial stages of local production.
Maxim Sokolov, the company’s general director, emphasizes that the first waves of output will target cars in the C and D classes. This strategic choice aims to expand the brand’s footprint in segments known for higher comfort, safety, and modern technology features. The model lineup under consideration includes vehicles branded as Lada, with the potential for a dual-brand strategy stemming from ongoing collaboration with Chinese automotive partners. Negotiations with several Chinese firms are in advanced stages, signaling a broad effort to diversify partnerships and strengthen localization in future phases.
According to Sokolov, the exact configuration of the collaboration is still being shaped. It is possible that more than one corporate partner will participate, depending on the specific vehicle programs and market needs. The plan envisions assembling C and D class vehicles that have not previously been offered by the company, followed by a gradual localization of components and assemblies. The supplier ecosystem will leverage established relationships with Nissan and Hyundai in St. Petersburg, ensuring an efficient and reliable supply of parts during the SKD phase and beyond. This approach supports a smoother ramp-up while maintaining competitive cost structures and service levels for customers.
The company has outlined a clear path for the next stage of production, with a target to begin assembly of 60,000 to 70,000 cars in 2024 at the site that formerly housed the Nissan manufacturing operations. This milestone marks a significant scaling of activities in the region and aligns with broader regional growth plans in the automotive sector. The transition involves retooling and adapting existing facilities to accommodate new models and manufacturing processes, while preserving high standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility throughout the operation.
Vote – win Lada!
In tandem with the production news, AVTOVAZ invites customers and enthusiasts to participate in the Behind the Wheel Grand Prix vote. The survey seeks input on the most exciting car novelties of the year, providing a platform for fans to express their preferences and help shape the brand’s upcoming introductions. Participation is straightforward, and respondents contribute opinions on design, performance, and features that matter most to drivers today.
As a token of appreciation for the time spent, three ferrets are set to be raffled among survey participants. Those who complete the questionnaire earlier, through the end of February, receive an additional chance to win. The event underscores AVTOVAZ’s commitment to customer engagement and transparency as it progresses through this transformative period for the company.
