AvtoVAZ Expands AGV Automation and Localizes Components for Vesta and Lada Lines

AvtoVAZ is advancing its automated logistics lineup by focusing on AGV automatic bogies, as highlighted by the corporate YouTube channel “In the Factory.” The plant’s core sections have already placed orders for more than 120 autonomous units, and the prototypes are in the final stages of testing. These developments signal a broader shift toward smarter, more efficient manufacturing processes at the company.

AGVs, or automated guided vehicles, are electric, self-directed machines that follow a pre-programmed route. Their movement is guided by a magnetic floor track and supported by wireless connectivity, enabling them to transport goods and even deliver components throughout the production floor with minimal human intervention. This level of automation is designed to streamline workflows, reduce downtime, and improve precision in material handling.

Originally, these automated trucks operated at the Renault facility. In 2020, AvtoVAZ began sourcing them from its partners and integrated them into its own production lines. The fleet, recognizable by its blue and white livery, is finished with the Gzhel-inspired aesthetic and prominently displays Renault branding as a nod to the collaboration and heritage of the platform. The branding choice underscores a blend of continuity and modernization within the company’s manufacturing ecosystem.

Recently, the newest batch of VAZ-made AGVs is distinguished by a gray-orange color scheme. AvtoVAZ engineers and operators are actively refining the design to boost reliability and push forward local component sourcing for these autonomous vehicles. They are engineered to operate with near-silent efficiency, ensuring they contribute to a quieter, safer production environment. When old AGVs rolled to the beat of Kalinka-Malinka, the latest models carry a more sophisticated musical cue—honoring a broader musical repertoire with a Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky-inspired melody that enhances safety signaling without being disruptive.

Within the company’s leadership, former Vice President Dmitry Kostromin has identified the competitive landscape facing the refreshed Lada Vesta lineup. The focus remains on differentiating AvtoVAZ through advanced automation, improved localization of parts, and a concerted effort to deliver reliable, cost-effective vehicles that resonate with modern buyers across North America and beyond.
