Armored Ambulances from Rostec: Rapid Production, Enhanced Protection, and Lada Niva Evolution

Armored Ambulances Hit the Road From Rostec’s Nizhny Novgorod Facility in Record Time

The manufacture of armored ambulances began at a Rostec state corporation facility in Nizhny Novgorod in a burst of speed. The project progressed from start to finish in one and a half months, far quicker than the typical twelve weeks usually required for this kind of production.

At the core of each vehicle sits a three door SUV derived from the Lada Niva Legend. The body is cut and lengthened by nearly a meter, providing space to accommodate a bedridden patient alongside a medical professional inside the cabin.

Armor is a defining feature of the ambulance. The sides are designed to resist bullets while the undercarriage is fortified to withstand blasts from mines. The armor is 4.5 millimeters thick hardened steel, a level of protection that goes beyond what one might expect from standard market options. Reports indicate the vehicle can endure shots fired from a distance of five meters.

The added armor and medical equipment contribute to a total weight increase of roughly 700 kilograms. The mass is further augmented by the presence of specialized medical devices and life support gear essential for critical patient care during transport.

Plans indicate that several dozen of these armored ambulances will be deployed to the conflict zone in the near term. The Nizhny Novgorod plant has the capacity to produce about 50 armored ambulances each month, with ambitions to grow production capacity in the months ahead.
