Ambulance Hijacking in Pitkyaranta: Mental Health Crisis and Vehicle Collisions

In the Russian region of Karelia, a man reported to be mentally ill hijacked an ambulance, collided with several parked vehicles, and then crashed into a tree, according to Karelinform.

The incident is described as having occurred on May 13 in the city of Pitkyaranta. The ambulance operator involved, identified as the person who fled the scene, was reportedly in a distressed mental state and received hospital treatment after the crash. Local reports note that police arrived at the suspect’s residence while he was wearing shorts and carrying a shovel, illustrating the chaotic sequence of events surrounding the episode.

Video footage from surveillance cameras later released shows the ambulance striking a VAZ automobile as it maneuvered around parked cars and subsequently colliding with a dark crossover vehicle.

Earlier reporting indicated the individual had been in Abkhazia. In a separate development, the local traffic police leadership positions were dissolved following a prior crash in which five people died, a detail that has been echoed in regional coverage.
