Leading Russian car manufacturers AvtoVAZ and UAZ have begun equipping several of their models with anti-lock braking systems (ABS). This development was noted in a recent industry update.
UAZ has started producing Patriot off-road vehicles with ABS and has upgraded engine specifications from Euro-2 to Euro-5. As of 2023, the Patriot is offered in two trim levels: the Base Icarus and the Base Icarus Package Limited. Alongside these updates, UAZ has integrated an ABS system sourced from a Chinese supplier, AGP, rather than Bosch. This AGP ABS is installed not only on the Patriot but also on the Pickup and Profi models, signaling a broader shift toward enhanced braking safety across the lineup.
AvtoVAZ has limited ABS-equipped models to the Lada Vesta NG, with production resuming in Togliatti in early March. The Vesta NG represents a focused effort to bring advanced braking technology to a popular sedan model, aligning with safety trends and potential regulatory expectations in the region.
Earlier industry movements mentioned at the start of 2023 indicated that imports of used cars into Russia had surged, rising by a factor of 2.8. This background context underscores how manufacturers may be balancing supply chain dynamics, market demand, and safety features as part of a broader evolution in the country’s automotive sector.
Overall, the shift toward deploying ABS across more models in Russia reflects both consumer demand for improved safety and the automotive sector’s adaptation to new technological and regulatory environments. As automakers like UAZ and AvtoVAZ integrate ABS on select trims and models, the market can expect continued diversification of braking systems, with choices expanding as suppliers and regulations evolve in parallel.
