They say that the estimated speed of the 1954 model GAZ-TR car was almost 800 km / h. They also say they sent an order “from above” to set a world speed record. But what is really known is that the eponymous engined car from the MiG-17 fighter was actually tested at the airport near Nizhny Novgorod.

Chassis GAZ-TR had a four-wheel chassis from the GAZ-12 (ZIM) with front steered wheels. Of course, in this case the car had no drive wheels due to the lack of a direct mechanical connection between the engine and the transmission of the car.

There was no question of 800 km / h: the length of the runway for such records is simply not enough, and what kind of wheels can withstand such speeds? That’s why we decided to accelerate to 300 km/h.

The car was driven by an experienced motorsportsman MA Metelev, but the race ended in an accident. The pilot survived thanks to the plane’s four-point seat belt. The topic was eventually closed.
