In 2022, car thieves primarily targeted vehicles from Korean brands, with Hyundai and Kia at the forefront of the statistics.
A study conducted by VSK Verzekeringshuis shows that Hyundai accounted for more than half of all insured automotive thefts, capturing 53 percent of the total. The second most affected brand was Kia, responsible for 22 percent of theft incidents, followed by Toyota at 9 percent. The most stolen Hyundai model was the Santa Fe, representing over half of Hyundai theft cases, while for Kia the Sportage was the top target, involved in about 29 percent of Kia thefts reported in the study.
Geographical patterns were clear. The greatest share of thefts occurred in the Moscow region, which accounted for 66 percent of cases. Overall, Moscow city and Saint Petersburg together represented 22 percent and 16 percent of the incidents, respectively. Seasonal trends showed that thefts peaked in June and September, with more cars disappearing during those months than at other times of the year.
