The Russian automaker has reached a deal with the FESCO transport group to move goods by intermodal means from Asia-Pacific region (APR) nations through Vladivostok to Tolyatti. Intermodal transport involves moving a single loading unit or vehicle through multiple transportation modes without reloading during mode changes, ensuring a smoother handoff between ships, trains, and trucks.
The cooperation agreement was signed by Andrey Severilov, chairman of FESCO’s board, and Maxim Sokolov, chairman of AvtoVAZ. For instance, a container carrying components for brand new Lada vehicles, mounted on a conveyor belt in Tolyatti, can be loaded in one country, cross several borders, and be unloaded only at the final destination. The arrangement underscores how tightly integrated logistics can keep production flowing with minimal handling en route.
From which origins will the deliveries come? The partners also plan to expand import transport from China to Togliatti via regular FESCO rail services, and FESCO Group with AVTOVAZ aim to tackle intermodal logistics challenges from India and Turkey while exploring rail transport cooperation with European countries. This was stated by FESCO in a recent briefing.
The parties intend to leverage FESCO’s extensive logistics capabilities, including its maritime and rail network, its container fleet, and the port and terminal facilities that enable efficient cargo movement. The current reality is that many components not produced domestically in Russia are sourced from China, India, Turkey, and various European nations. A notable bottleneck in Togliatti’s assembly components is ABS systems, which were previously supplied by a Bosch facility in Samara but has ceased operations in Russia as of late. AvtoVAZ previously indicated that resuming ABS production would be feasible in 2023. More information on the broader vehicle program is available through official channels dedicated to company updates and industry coverage.
- AvtoVAZ has signaled that car production with ABS could resume when supply chains stabilize and critical parts become available again in the market.
