This year, Apple Inc. plans to launch its most expensive iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in India for the first time, a significant step for the American tech giant and the Asian country’s manufacturing sector. reports Bloomberg publication.
Key partner Foxconn Technology Group will begin assembling the new devices within weeks of their announcement this fall, people familiar with the matter said. The company has begun training thousands of workers at its factory in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, aiming to start production as close as possible to the global debut of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.
Apple’s entire iPhone lineup is made in India, a key development for the American tech giant that has been gaining momentum in 2021 thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fiscal stimulus for the high-tech sector. Apple still makes most of its iPhones in China but is gradually expanding outside the country to reduce risks from tensions between Beijing and Washington.
As a result of these efforts, Apple generated $14 billion worth of iPhones in India last fiscal year, accounting for 14% of global production.
Apple will export the bulk of its India-made Pro and Pro Max devices to Europe, the Middle East and the US as demand for the top-end versions is relatively weak in India, but the upcoming holiday season could boost sales.
