Hackers can hack into almost any device via Bluetooth and create a copy of the victim’s trusted network that the device automatically connects to. This was reported by RIA Novosti Leading cybersecurity analyst at MTS Web Services Jamil Medzhidov.
“Through Bluetooth, hackers can hack almost any device, including smartphones, tablets, and smart home devices. Medzhidov noted that attackers use special programs that help detect nearby active Bluetooth connections and can also see which networks the user’s device has previously connected to.
Once such connections are identified, hackers can trick a Bluetooth device into creating a fake trusted network that the phone will connect to without the user’s knowledge, he said.
The expert added that such an attack allows to compromise data on the device, control it and related gadgets, and also track the user’s location. Most often, such attacks occur in public places, where attackers only need a laptop, a cheap Bluetooth adapter and special software.
To protect against such threats, Majidov recommends turning off Bluetooth in public places and disabling data sharing features that use technology such as AirDrop when not needed. They should only be enabled when receiving data from a familiar source.
It is also important to use strong passwords and avoid connecting to unknown devices. Regular software updates will help close Bluetooth security gaps. The expert recommends limiting access to Bluetooth for applications and adjusting visibility settings so that the device can only be detected by devices it is already connected to.
There are five types of Bluetooth attacks, including BlueJacking, which sends spam from the victim’s device to nearby devices, and BlueSnarfing, which steals personal data through a connection to the device.
