14 years after the launch of the iPad, Apple is finally introducing a native Calculator app for its popular iPadOS platform in 2024. Apple’s head of system interface development, Ty Jordan, explained why the company is in no rush to fix the issue in an interview with journalist and blogger Christopher Lawley. reports Wccftech broadcast.
The problem, Jordan said, was that simply extending the iPhone app to the iPad’s larger screen wasn’t enough. He noted that Apple carefully considered the unique capabilities of the iPad and its accessories, such as the Apple Pencil, before porting the functionality to it.
The goal was to “reimagine” math on the iPad and create “a little magic.” This led to a new feature in Math Notes that lets users write equations by hand and get the results in the same format.
Previously, the absence of a calculator on the iPad was the subject of mockery and memes on the internet. According to one legend, Steve Jobs banned the integration of the calculator into the iPad when he was shown an extended interface from the iPhone.
The native Calculator app was one of the main innovations of iPadOS 18, which was released in June 2024.
