Russians warned of data theft via Telegram

Bots used in chats within Telegram messenger can leak user data. Dmitry Galov, a cybersecurity specialist at Kaspersky Lab, told socialbites.ca.

“In terms of information transfer, a chatbot is the same user interaction mechanism as a data filling form on a website. As in every field, there are fraudsters trying to make money for users in this field,” warned the information security expert.

According to Galov, before you independently transfer personal data to a chatbot, you need to make sure that it is the same channel and not an imitation created by cybercriminals.

“Also, it’s important to consider what information is asked of you in a chatbot. The same rule applies here as with phone scams, phishing, social engineering,” he explained.

The expert added that it is also important for chatbot developers to think about the security of the user data they collect – to properly store access keys and protect the device on which management is carried out.
