The South Korean military command plans to ban the use of iPhones in all military institutions in the country in order to prevent the leakage of classified information. This measure could come into force from June 1 of this year. reports Korea Herald publication.
According to sources in the military environment, the ban will only apply to Apple products. At the same time, devices based on the Android operating system, including Korean Samsung devices, will not be affected by the restrictions. This may be because Android devices allow more flexible customization of system functions necessary to meet national security requirements.
As part of the proposed measures, the military department is also considering expanding the ban on the use of all types of smartwatches and wearable devices. If the ban is applied to all units, approximately 500 thousand military personnel will be affected.
The reason for such actions was the non-compliance of Apple devices with security requirements, that is, the inability to control the basic functions of devices by external applications. This is due to the company’s policy of protecting user privacy, which does not allow external applications, except for the camera, to interfere with the operation of the system.
There are difficulties in using the special National Defense Mobile Security application, which has been mandatory on the smartphones of military personnel since 2013. When enabled, this service blocks camera, Wi-Fi, modem, USB and microphone functions. Moreover, on Android, its functionality is implemented smoothly, thanks to the open architecture of the system.
