Microsoft released an update for Windows 11, and after installation, users began to greatly complain about the appearance of ads in the Start menu. In this respect reports The Verge’s edition.
The build number of the update is KB5036980. Its release took place on April 23, 2024. Currently, the update is optional, but according to The Verge, Microsoft will make it mandatory over time.
After installing KB5036980, ads appear in the Suggestions section of the Start menu. Ads are icons of apps that Microsoft invites users to try. This is especially how the IT company promotes its 1Password password manager. Microsoft believes the new feature will allow many people to discover “great new programs.”
“Microsoft has been experimenting with advertising within Windows for over 10 years. Windows 10 already has ad inserts on the lock screen and Start menu, so it’s no surprise that banners are appearing in Windows 11,” The Verge noted.
Although Start menu ads appear automatically after the update, you can turn them off from Windows 11’s Experience Personalization settings.
