A number of lawsuits have been filed in the US against leading video game developers and publishers, including Microsoft, Activision Blizzard, Roblox, Epic Games and Rockstar. The woman accuses developers of creating overly exciting games with “beautiful graphics” and causing addiction among users, reports PC Gamer portal.
One of the lawsuits filed in America alleges that games such as Roblox, Fortnite, Call of Duty and Minecraft benefit his son from psychological mechanisms that lead to addiction since he was 12 years old. Her now 21-year-old son spends up to $350 a month on gaming, has dropped out of school, and has serious mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, as well as withdrawal symptoms such as anger and violent outbursts.
The woman believes that developers are responsible for exploiting the “reward system” in the brain, especially in minors, to create addiction and cause mental and physical harm. Among other things, the woman noted that Call of Duty has a “fast game pace and beautiful graphics.”
In response to the lawsuits, lawyers for the developers stated that video games are simply a form of expressive art, as confirmed by a 2011 Supreme Court decision, and that their objections do not justify the ban.
The complaint also describes the games’ alleged harmful features, including “aggressive monetization” and others. However, most of these complaints relate to aspects of the game that are generally considered normal or even positive. For example, trophies in Call of Duty, multiplayer modes in Minecraft and various missions in GTA 5 that only expand the gameplay.
