In 2023, information security experts noted an increase in phishing attacks against retail businesses and, in particular, private entrepreneurs acting as sellers on marketplaces. Alexander Vurasko, head of the Solar AURA external digital threat monitoring center of the Solar group of companies, told socialbites.ca.
Solar AURA experts detected approximately 7 thousand phishing sources in 2023. The largest share (17.4%) came from sites imitating various online stores. Vurasko also emphasized that a significant portion of such resources are created to deceive not the customers of the marketplaces, but the sellers who offer their goods there.
“Since mid-July last year, we note the mass emergence of fake websites whose purpose is to gain unauthorized access to the seller’s personal account on major trading platforms. This trend will continue in 2024; New fake sites appear every day,” explained the expert.
The credit and finance sector ranks second in terms of the number of phishing sources. In 2023, the main focus of attackers in this sector has shifted from capturing bank card data to gaining access to a bank customer’s personal account. At the same time, 8% of phishing sites detected in the banking sector were used to distribute malware: remote computer administration tools camouflaged as bank technical support programs.
“Such sites have been actively used by phone scammers in recent years,” Vurasco added.
Russians before warned about the danger posed by neural networks.
