Doctor Rashid Diaz (43), from Hereford District Hospital, was on a Ryanair flight from Birmingham to Verona on 9 January 2024. During the flight, an elderly woman felt short of breath. Diaz volunteered to help after a crew member asked if there was a doctor on board. Learning that the woman had heart problems in the past, the doctor asked the flight attendant for an Apple Watch. He used a smartwatch to monitor the oxygen level in a sick woman’s blood.
Seeing that oxygen levels were low, Diaz asked the crew for an oxygen tank. With his help, the doctor was able to stabilize the woman’s condition until the plane landed in Verona. The passenger reportedly later received additional medical attention and made a rapid recovery.
Later, Diaz said that the Apple Watch could indeed replace medical diagnostic tools in emergency situations. However, in his opinion, it would be better to have professional equipment on planes. He said that especially blood pressure meters and glucose meters can be useful for rapid diagnosis.
