Apple has added an alternative payment method for in-app purchases to iOS apps. Now developers can embed links to their own websites in applications using a form for bank cards. Previously, payments could only be made through the App Store. In this respect reports MacRumor’s publication.
Developers who want to offer a new payment option must apply for the right to host external links for purchases. Developers can add links using the StoreKit service only after the application is approved. Currently this exception applies only to the United States.
Apple allowed payments using third-party tools due to an antitrust investigation launched following a class-action lawsuit filed in the US. The plaintiffs’ aim, including Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, was to get rid of the commission Apple charges developers on the App Store.
Although Apple allows alternative payment methods, it has not eliminated the fees. It’s also shrunk: The company now charges 27% instead of 30% for one-time purchases and subscriptions up to two years, and 12% instead of 15% for subscriptions longer than two years.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has criticized Apple’s innovation and plans to challenge it in district court.
