Enthusiasts compared Windows and Linux in games 09:37

portal Computer Base Valve conducted a comparative analysis of the gaming performance of Windows and Linux operating systems using the Proton tool. It turns out that some games run faster on Linux than on Windows.

A computer with an Asus ROG Strix B550-A Gaming motherboard, 32 GB DDR4-3600 RAM, Radeon RX 6700 XT Nitro graphics card and AMD Ryzen 7 5800X processor was used in the test. Games were run at Full HD resolution on a monitor with a 144 Hz refresh rate without using AMD FSR.

The operating systems chosen were Microsoft Windows 11, Nobara Linux (Fedora-based), Arch Linux and POP!_OS (Ubuntu-based). The Proton Experimental package was installed on November 15, 2023 in all Linux distributions.

Thus, the average FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 on Nobara was 89.6, Arch Linux – 88, Windows 11 – 82.3 and POP!_OS – 72.7. Tests were also conducted on Forspoken, Starfield and The Talos Prince II, where Linux distributions showed much better performance than Windows. The only game where Windows 11 showed its superiority was Rachet & Clank.
