On one of the central streets of San Francisco, a woman fell under the wheels of an unmanned taxi after being hit by a manned car. In this respect reports CNBC.
It is known that the victim crossed the road in the wrong place and was hit by the driver who fled the scene of the accident. Due to the impact, the woman was thrown into the opposite lane, where she was crushed by Cruise’s unmanned taxi.
It was stated that there were no passengers in the taxi at the time of the incident and the movement of the taxi was monitored by the operators from the remote control center. After the accident, the taxi did not hide and remained at the scene until the arrival of police and rescuers, who had to remove the victim from under the autonomous vehicle using special equipment.
While the police are launching an investigation into the incident, they are trying to find the driver who ran away after hitting the woman.
Unmanned taxi Cruise belongs to the company of the same name, which develops and operates robotic vehicles. In San Francisco, such taxis have been operating since August 2023 and are the first commercial autonomous vehicles in the city. It was noted that this was the first accident involving an unmanned Cruise taxi in San Francisco in which one person was injured.
