The multiplayer spin-off of the popular game The Last of Us has not been canceled but is in a “virtual freeze” state. This was reported by Kotaku With reference to sources.
It appears that development of the game, which has been awaited for several years, has been suspended indefinitely. In addition, Naughty Dog studio decided to lay off its non-staff employees.
According to Kotaku, approximately 25 people were notified that their contracts would be terminated at the end of October. Among them are representatives of art, production, quality control experts and other departments. The publication’s sources also claim that the employees were not paid any compensation and were banned from discussing the situation publicly.
At this time, Naughty Dog has not made any official comments regarding the outages and status of The Last of Us multiplayer.
In spring 2023, it was already reported that Naughty Dog was delaying online play for The Last of Us. The studio later noted that the project was in development. According to the original plan, the spin-off was planned as a continuously updated service game, but these plans were later revised.
