According to an analysis by IQ Technology, the level of counterfeit equipment from international manufacturers in Russian markets has doubled in one year. The share of fake smartphones is 31%, the share of laptops is 30%, and the share of smart watches is 63%. Mostly Apple and Samsung electronic products are fake. Market participants attribute this to the reduced control over counterfeiting by brands leaving the Russian market. In addition, marketplaces claim that the share of counterfeit products does not exceed 0.1%. The post writes about it “Kommersant”.
According to an IQ Technology report, from July 2022 to July 2023, the number of counterfeit equipment from brands leaving the country nearly doubled. Share of fake smartphones from 12% to 31%, share of laptops from 22% to 31%, share of small household appliances from 15% to 34%, share of smart watches from 35% to 63%, the share of headphones and speakers increased from 27% to 69%. The research covered 15,000 products on Wildberry, Ozone, Yandex.Market, Sbermegamarket and AliExpress.
Alexander Logunov, Managing Partner of IQ Technology, explained that smartphones are most frequently imitated, especially well-known brands such as Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi. He noted that the fakes had a similar design to the originals but differed in size and operating system. For example, fake Apple devices use the Android operating system instead of iOS. Logunov also mentioned that fake laptops are more difficult to recognize, as they differ in internal components such as hard drive, motherboard, RAM and processor, which can be replaced by cheaper counterparts. According to him, counterfeit electronics are mostly produced in Pakistan, China and India.
Ozone representatives said the company monitors counterfeit products, including the use of neural networks. Wildberries disagreed with IQ Technology’s assessments, emphasizing that they track all transactions in real time and that buyers can check the ratings of goods and sellers before purchasing. AKİT President Artem Sokolov said that according to the organization, the share of forgery on websites does not exceed 0.1 percent. AliExpress declined to comment on the situation.
Previously in the State Duma suggested prohibiting the granting of loans to foreign agents.
