The College Football Association of America (CFBPA) has urged players to boycott Electronic Arts (EA) because of the low fees it pays athletes to use their appearances in their games. In this respect informs Version of GamesIndustry.biz.
The scandal erupted during the development of an American football simulator featuring the EA Sports College Football youth teams. The gaming company allocated a budget of $5 million in fees to the athletes for their appearance, an impressive amount split among the players, which turned out to be $500 each. At the same time, athletes are not entitled to any additional payments such as royalties.
The CFBPA rated the amount as “ridiculously small.” Especially against the background of the payments received by other American football simulators from the same EA to digitize the appearance of players participating in the Madden series. One Madden athlete told the CFBPA that he received $28,000 from game developers this year alone.
The CFBPA has stated that players should not purchase EA Sports College Football when it is released, in order to support the players appearing in the game. EA Sports College Football is scheduled to launch in summer 2024.
