three reasons
Yandex company has removed the subscription of 10 TB of cloud storage from the tariff scale of the Yandex.Disk service. A message about it appeared on the Telegram channel of the online publication Mobile Review. The authors of the post claim that it is possible to purchase a tariff for 10 TB in the Yandex.Disk service “quite recently”.
Checking the socialbites.ca editors showed that the previous link to the page for choosing a tariff for Yandex.Disk now automatically redirects the user to the page with the Yandex 360 service tariffs. It can purchase access to a virtual disk with a maximum capacity of 3TB.
Mobile Research Group Principal Analyst and Mobile Review Editor-in-Chief Eldar Murtazin believes that the company’s data storage systems and equipment serving cloud storage eliminates the possibility of charging “large” tariffs due to resource savings. The supply of new devices of this class due to sanctions in Russia.
“The reasons are simple. Firstly, because of the sanctions, a small number of data storage systems began to be imported into Russia. Secondly, on the eve of the change in the scale of the tariff, as part of the campaign, Yandex sold the tariff on Yandex 360 cheap for 2 TB and, apparently, attracted a lot of customers Thirdly, it is clear that Yandex currently has problems with transferring data from a data center in Finland to Russia. You not only need to download a large amount of data, but also have it stored somewhere in Russia,” Murtazin said.
Igor Dorofeev, President of the Association of Data Center Industry Participants, shared a similar view with socialbites.ca. According to him, recently Yandex has experienced an increase in the load on data storage systems due to the transition of its Russian business to local cloud storage. The second process arose because of the threat of Russian customers being cut off from foreign services. In this regard, the situation of Yandex, according to Dorofeev, is also worsening due to shortages of computing power.
“With the current regulation of the tariff policy, the company is likely to solve the problem of smoothing and extending the load peak over time, including optimizing resources,” said the expert.
iKS-Consulting analyst Stanislav Mirin added that Russia’s increase in capacity demand from local companies is temporary, but still removes existing capacity reserves and requires further increase.
“Until the issue is resolved, providers tend to limit consumers to higher volumes, especially since selling smaller volumes to more customers generates higher revenue because traditionally the price per unit of service in a small package is more expensive,” he said.
For example, the company now asks for 409 rubles for a tariff of 3 TB. per month: 136 rubles. monthly for each TB. The tariff with 1 TB of storage already costs 199 rubles. monthly. The same principle applies to Yandex.Disk tariffs.
“A 10TB package is a pretty big amount for the average user. It was profitable to sell in the presence of a large overcapacity even at a lower price to increase the server recycling rate. “In case of higher utilization of capacities with high demand, it is more profitable for the company to sell the service in smaller packages at a higher price per service unit,” he said.
By contrast, Denis Afanasiev, head of the cloud direction of CorpSoft24, admits that there is another reason for the elimination of “big tariffs” – low demand.
The same reason was voiced to the press service of Yandex. They noted that the “big” tariffs were canceled on April 22 due to their unpopularity.
“You can now get 200GB, 1TB or 3TB in Drive under tariffs. These are the skins that people buy most often. Tariffs with a volume of more than 5 TB were not requested by users, so we decided to focus on the development of popular tariffs. ”
At the same time, Yandex assured that for users of existing tariffs exceeding 3 TB, nothing will change – if you continue to pay for the subscription, access to storage and all other services and functions of the subscription will remain in full.
Critical moment – in a year
At the same time, experts note that, despite the removal of “large” tariffs from Yandex, it is still too early to worry about the lack of cloud storage in the Russian Federation. According to Murtazin, there are alternatives to Yandex.Disk in Russia.
“There are alternatives. At least against one service even in the Russian market – “VK Cloud”. Another thing is that at the moment all participants in this market have the same plus or minus situation – there is not enough equipment. Western services are also still available in Russia. But there “Firstly, due to suspension of business in the Russian Federation or leaving the country, some of them greatly deteriorated customer support. Secondly, it is now quite difficult to pay for services on foreign platforms,” says.
However, Murtazin adds that the situation may worsen during the year.
“If the current situation in equipment supply continues, the critical moment in the cloud storage market will come in six months or a year. “A kind of virtual apocalypse can happen when millions of users lose the ability to save anything on the computer,” he said.
In response, Mirin added that an alternative can be found even among Yandex products so far. For those who do not have enough 3TB in Yandex 360, he recommends the Yandex Cloud enterprise solution, which has similar functionality, but is more expensive.
Representatives of the Cloud Mail.Ru service, in a meeting with socialbites.ca, did not comment on long-term prospects, but noted that at the moment they are not experiencing difficulties in accessing equipment.
