On the third match day of the 2023 League Cup, River was defeated 2-0 by Vélez at the Jose Amalfitani Stadium. The club continues to struggle away from home, collecting just three points in the competition.
The setback from Inter de Porto Alegre in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 still stings. Since then, River has shown little improvement and has gradually declined in form.
Before their clash with Vélez, manager Martín Demichelis made several changes to the starting lineup, bringing in Pablo Solari and Facundo Colidio to form a 4-3-3. The tactical tweak failed to spark fluid play, and the former Tigre winger remained largely quiet on the flank, unable to influence the game.
In contrast, Vélez treated the match as a final. Every ball was contested with relentless pressure that unsettled the visitors. After twenty minutes, Claudio Aquino opened the scoring with a clean finish following a long ball from Lautaro Gianetti, slipping past a tentative touch from the makeshift winger Santiago Simón.
The first phase of the match was bad for River, but the second phase was worse. Vélez pressed from all angles and deserved to extend the lead, which came at 60 minutes through a powerful strike by Santiago Castro.
With ample time left for a comeback, there was never a clear argument for one. The result added to a troubling away record for Núñez, now with one win in the last twelve road games. The defending Argentine champions will need to improve markedly.
