VAR in the Copa del Rey: what’s happening in the early rounds
The Copa del Rey has kept the early rounds free from VAR, and this approach has sparked discussions about fairness, cost, and accessibility. Across world football, video arbitration has transformed the game, and Spain is no exception, with LaLiga adopting VAR support starting in the 2018/19 season. This broader adoption has shown how technology can influence decisions on pivotal moments in a match.

Not all leagues have embraced video assistance at the same pace. In the Copa del Rey, for example, the initial rounds in 2022-2023 did not yet employ VAR in the first ks rounds. The Cup’s format shift, approved by the Royal Spanish Football Federation and its General Assembly four seasons ago, created a knockout structure powered by a single match. This change encouraged participation from teams across different competitive levels, broadening opportunities for smaller clubs. Yet some venues lack the infrastructure to install VAR, which affects its rollout in these early stages.
Will VAR be used in the Copa del Rey 2022-2023 or not, and when is it planned?
The first rounds do not anticipate the use of VAR. In prior seasons, VAR typically entered play at the round of 16, a stage where many teams are already competing from higher divisions and often have the necessary technology installed. For the 2022-23 edition, the RFEF scheduled VAR to come into action from the quarterfinals, when just eight teams survive. That quarterfinal round is slated for January 23, roughly a week after the round of 16 concludes, signaling a staged integration aligned with tournament logistics and facilities.
