Skating champion Katarina Gerboldt, who earned a bronze at the Russian championships in women’s singles, expressed hope that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will approach the Kamila Valieva case with fairness and avoid bias.
On February 21, it emerged that the World Anti-Doping Agency has filed an appeal with CAS challenging the ruling issued by RUSADA in the Valieva matter. WADA is seeking a four-year disqualification for the skater.
Gerboldt noted that the situation feels predictable and that the appeal provides a chance to challenge the outcome. She emphasized the importance of continuing the fight and acknowledged that luck can play a role, while she personally hopes CAS will render a balanced decision.
Valieva’s positive test surfaced after the Beijing Olympics team event, during which she helped Russia secure a gold medal as part of the national team.
Earlier in January, RUSADA announced that the court had acquitted Valieva of anti-doping violations. The only consequence reported was the annulment of her results from a single national championship, resulting in the loss of her 2021 title within Russia.
Reports also noted that commentator Dmitry Guberniev weighed in on the CAS and WADA objections to Valieva’s acquittal, indicating that the skater is exploring options to demonstrate her innocence and pursue further steps. The wider sports arbitration process continues to unfold as national and international bodies assess the legal avenues available to address the case.
