General update from the Tour de France in the Pyrenees
The Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar surged to victory on the sixth stage, the second and final Pyrenean summit of the race, finishing at the ascent to the port of Cauterets. The win reshaped the general classification as he crossed the line ahead of Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, who took the overall leadership in a dramatic turn for the GC standings.
The UAE Team Emirates rider had been just over a minute behind the reigning champion the day before, and his victory by 23 seconds over the field served as a confident statement. The stage outcome revived interest in the Tour by highlighting Pogacar’s climbing strength on a mountain finish that tested the GC contenders once more.
Pogacar remains among the leaders, moving into a position where he trails the current yellow jersey holder by a narrow margin. He sits in second place overall, 25 seconds behind the race lead. He overcame the previous day’s victor, Australian Jai Hindley, who finished 2 minutes and 39 seconds behind Pogacar on the climb, with the time gap to the lead reduced to 1 minute 34 seconds.
England’s Simon Yates lies in fourth, at 3 minutes and 14 seconds. The 22-year-old Spanish rookie Carlos Rodriguez sits in fifth, 3 minutes and 30 seconds back, signifying how the race has become a tightly contested battle among the GC hopefuls as the mountains continue to separate the contenders from the rest of the field.
