Nearly a thousand athletes from 19 countries registered for the 35th Torrevieja Half Marathon
Hassan Ahouchar proved once again there are few rivals in Turkey, stepping into long distance events and delivering a strong performance in the Alicante region when Kenyan or Ethiopian runners are absent. The Moroccan veteran claimed a 35th Torrevieja Half Marathon title, as nearly a thousand participants from 19 nations lined up for the classic test in the sunlit streets of Torrevieja.
The event drew a diverse field, with many runners sharing the pride of crossing the finish line in a race that has become a staple on the regional calendar. In the men’s category, the top finishers demonstrated speed and endurance across the challenging 21.0975-kilometer course. The winner completed the distance in one hour, seven minutes, and 16 seconds, a time that placed him ahead of a competitive pack. Iván Hérnádez Illán, representing Trail Murcia, followed in a rapid 1:07:33. Local athlete Stu Spencer, affiliated with the Puerto de Torrevieja Athletics Club, claimed third in 1:08:34. Notably, Andrés Micó from Villena posted a solid 1:09:10, securing fourth position and underscoring the depth of the field in the Alicante region.
At the finish, the podium showcased a mix of regional strength and international presence, highlighting the event’s status as a meeting point for elite and hobbyist runners alike. The top three men’s times are attributed to the official results, with local pride amplified by the home crowd support and the scenic route that winds through the seaside town.
In the women’s race, Iida María Haataja achieved victory with a time of 1:22:43, finishing ahead of Estefanía Gázquez who crossed in 1:25:48 and Estefania Carbonell who completed the course in 1:31:49. The women’s podium reflected a strong field and the rising competitiveness of female distance runners in the region. Haataja’s performance stood out for its measured pacing and efficient finishing kick, capturing the attention of spectators and fellow runners alike.
A total of 432 runners completed the full 21-kilometer distance, illustrating the event’s broad appeal and the enthusiastic support from Torrevieja residents. A concurrent 5-kilometer race also took place, where Mohammed Reda led the field with a time of 15:08. Florencio Arroba took second in 15:14, and Eloy Serrano closed in third at 15:15, finishing strong in the final sprint. The 5K event attracted 437 finishers, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the weekend’s racing program.
Both distances drew a large crowd that created a festive atmosphere around the finish area, where spectators cheered every athlete who crossed the line. The Torrevieja Half Marathon remains certified by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation and is included in the national long-distance calendar, ensuring continued recognition for competitors and clubs alike. The organization and course design contribute to the event’s reputation as a well-run, scenic challenge that attracts participants from across the country and beyond.
