Sychev recalls Kostomarov illness and family privacy appeal

Former Russia national team striker Dmitry Sychev spoke about the momentous situation surrounding Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov. The two athletes connected through the Ice Age 7 project, and Sychev said he was taken aback by the gravity of Kostomarov’s illness. He shared that he hopes Kostomarov can recover amid the challenging treatment, and he urged the press to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

“We were very close in our communications. Of course, what happened to him was shocking. I wish Roman and his family strength and resilience. We stayed in touch, and we even organized a football tournament. Ilya Averbukh and Roman put in good performances, while we took part in the tournament alongside training at Malaya Arena in Luzhniki,” Sychev told socialbites.ca. He added that Roman has the essential qualities—strength and patience—to prevail, and he remained hopeful that everything would work out in the end.

News emerged on January 10 that Kostomarov had been hospitalized. It was reported that he was admitted to the intensive care unit due to pneumonia and required artificial lung support, with his condition described as very serious.

The athlete was subsequently moved to a hospital in Kommunarka, where he received resuscitation efforts and ECMO support. Reports also indicated that Kostomarov had lost sight in his right eye and had suffered two strokes during the course of his illness.

On February 7, media updates stated that Kostomarov had undergone the amputation of both feet. Later reports also mentioned the possible amputation of fingers, underscoring the severe progression of the medical crisis he faced.

Sychev reflected on Kostomarov’s journey in discussing how figure skating remains among the most demanding sports, noting the immense physical and mental demands involved for athletes who push through injuries and life-threatening illnesses alike. The conversation underscored a sense of admiration for Kostomarov’s perseverance and the support shown by his teammates and fans as he confronted a path through serious medical challenges. The exchange also highlighted the broader concern within the sports community for Kostomarov and his family as they navigate a trying period together, with many wishing for relief and recovery in the weeks and months ahead.
