Roman Kostomarov, the 2006 Olympic ice dancing champion, is gradually on the mend following serious health issues. Reports from sports24 indicate a slow but ongoing recovery process.
A source close to the case notes that the recovery is unfolding without any current concussions, and there are no apparent brain injuries at this stage. The update reflects cautious optimism about his condition as doctors monitor his response to treatment.
News first emerged on January 10 that Kostomarov had been hospitalized. It was reported that he was admitted to intensive care because of pneumonia and required artificial lung ventilation, with his condition described as extremely serious at that time.
He subsequently moved to a hospital in Kommunarka, where he underwent resuscitation and was connected to ECMO life-support. It was also reported that Kostomarov experienced a loss of sight in his right eye and suffered two strokes during his illness.
According to a February 7 update from TASS, doctors made the difficult decision to amputate both of his legs in response to the complications arising from his condition.
In his skating career, Kostomarov shared the ice with Tatyana Navka, earning world championship titles twice, along with three European crowns. He also claimed three Grand Prix Final victories and three Russian national championships during his competitive years.
Former Doctor of Medical Sciences Andrey Shestakov stated that there is no positive justification for the treatment he received, highlighting concerns about the medical management involved in the case.
