Sochi Confirms Death of Matvey Michkov’s Father, Reflects on Team Support

The Kontinental Hockey League club Sochi reported the death of Andrey Vladislavovich Michkov, the father of rising hockey star Matvey Michkov. The club’s official channel confirmed the loss and offered heartfelt condolences to the Michkov family and their friends. In a message released through the team’s telegraph channel, Sochi pledged to stand by Matvey and to provide every form of support needed during this painful time.

According to the club, the search for Andrey Michkov has concluded with a tragic outcome. The family had previously reported that he had disappeared on the evening of April 2, leaving the rented apartment where they were staying in the Moscow region. He had assured his relatives that he would return soon, but his phone subsequently became unreachable, preventing contact for authorities and family members alike.

Matvey Michkov, who is on loan to Sochi from SKA Saint Petersburg, has appeared in 27 games for the South Coast club. In those appearances, he has accumulated nine goals and 11 assists, contributing to the team’s on-ice performance amid a challenging season where Sochi did not advance to the KHL playoffs and finished at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

The matter also touched on broader hockey context, with comments from the sport’s veteran community. Igor Liba, a former two-time Olympic medalist and a noted figure in European hockey, indicated that any discussion of Russia’s participation in the Ice Hockey World Championship would be incomplete without considering the national team’s role and the impact of its players and coaches on the event. His remarks highlighted the ongoing conversations around national representation and the significance of major international tournaments for the sport’s history and future in the region.
