American mixed martial artist Sean O’Malley, the UFC bantamweight champion, reflected on a YouTube channel about a recurring nightmare involving a Russian titleholder who has held the promotion’s lightweight belt, Islam Makhachev.

“Islam is a very intimidating opponent. I once dreamed I had to compete against him. I woke up thinking, thank goodness this was only a dream. Makhachev has been meticulously developed and is an exceptionally seasoned fighter. I believe Makhachev operates on another level,” he stated.

Makhachev is scheduled to fight next on June 8 against American contender Justin Gaethje.

On October 21, 2023, Makhachev locked in an early finish against Australian interim champion Alex Volkanovski in the main event of UFC 294 held in Abu Dhabi. The Russian secured a knockout victory in the opening round, marking his second consecutive title defense, and his record climbed to 25 wins in 26 fights.

Earlier, on February 12, 2023, Makhachev defeated Volkanovski by unanimous decision after five rounds at UFC 284, marking his first title defense under the UFC banner.

Previously in Russia, Gaethje was described as having little chance against Makhachev.

Analysts note that the rivalry between these athletes has shaped a significant narrative in the lightweight division. Makhachev has demonstrated a blend of grappling mastery and striking efficiency, which opponents must address to disrupt his rhythm. His ascent has often been linked to a highly disciplined training approach, a strong team behind him, and a strategic game plan that emphasizes control, pace, and pressure. The dynamics of Makhachev’s recent performances have reinforced his status as a premier threat in the division, drawing attention from fans and contenders alike. The momentum behind his title runs has also influenced how challengers prepare for high-stakes bouts, shaping media coverage and betting markets as well. This backdrop frames every upcoming matchup, including the anticipated clash with Gaethje, which promises to test different facets of both fighters’ arsenals.
