Scaloni stands beside a partner who joined him through a pivotal moment in his playing days, a loss that ultimately redirected his path toward coaching.

Today, Lionel Scaloni is regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in world football. His ascent is often linked to the support of his wife, Elisa Montero, whose influence helped him stay engaged with football even as he shifted away from the pitch. A potential Qatar 2022 triumph with Argentina would mark a historic achievement for a coach who arrived on the international scene with no prior head coaching roles at the club level.

In Scaloni’s own words, his decision to become a coach was shaped by his wife’s encouragement, urging him to remain connected to the sport throughout different stages of life and career.

How is Scaloni’s coaching staff structured today?

HOW DID SCALONI MEET ELISA MONTERO?

Scaloni described to Star+ how fate can turn a setback into a doorway to a lasting partnership, recounting the sequence of events that led him to the person who became the love of his life.

“I headed to England for a short spell that included a FA Cup final against Liverpool. The match finished 3-3 after a late volley, and penalties decided the result. That moment, paired with the subsequent choices in my career, changed the direction of my life. If I had won that final, the path would have been different, and my family would not exist as it does now.”

“I met Elisa in Mallorca during a loan spell before returning to Lazio. I was 31; she was 29. It was a chaotic moment with the search for a contact, a moment where timing and luck intersected. She didn’t return to the place where they first met. Mallorca, a small island, became the stage where a connection was found. I told her I liked her and that I had to return to Italy, and she chose to come with me. The next day she agreed, leaving everything behind. We went to Rome, and we have been together for many years since.”

In truth, Montero remains largely out of the public eye beyond her volleyball past and her influence on Scaloni’s coaching career. Scaloni tends to keep his private life private and does not seek attention through social media or public appearances.

The couple has two children from their relationship, Ian, aged 11, and Noah, six, born in Rome and Mallorca respectively.
