This article covers the recent developments surrounding the footballer Santi Mina. After the daylight on Wednesday, Mina announced his decision to depart from the squad. Reports state that this comes in the context of a widely followed case in which the actor received a four-year prison sentence for sexual abuse. In response, the club indicated it would open a disciplinary process at its headquarters to better understand Mina’s responsibilities in light of the court’s ruling.

The club press release emphasized that Mina would be removed from first team duties on a temporary basis and on precautionary terms, while ensuring that the club can continue its activities as planned and without prejudice to future decisions.

Official communication from RC Celta identified Santi Mina as the individual involved in the case. The club’s statement dated May 4 2022 reiterated the temporary nature of Mina’s removal from the first team during the investigation and disciplinary review.

The club later noted that it would respect the right to defense. Mina, whose legal team has already indicated plans to appeal the sentence, stated that the defense was prepared for review. The club underlined the need to protect its image and values, while firmly denying the sexual abuse charges as outlined in the judgment issued by the Third Section of the County Court.

Santi Mina sentenced to 4 years in prison for sexual abuse

Sentence

Santi Mina was sentenced to four years in prison for sexual abuse involving a young woman in Mojácar, a municipality in Almería, in June 2017. The court did not find evidence of violence or intimidation and therefore acquitted the accusation of sexual assault as presented by the Prosecutor’s Office and the special prosecution.

The case also involved the footballer David Goldar, who was acquitted of charges related to acting as a necessary collaborator in the same proceedings.

In addition to the prison term, the court ordered Mina to pay compensation of 50,000 euros to the victim and imposed a 12-year ban on approaching or communicating with or coming within 500 meters of the person involved. This ruling reflects the court’s assessment of the harm suffered and the appropriate level of accountability determined in the judgment delivered by the presiding magistrate.
