Medical experts have expressed cautious optimism about the health status of Olympic ice dancer Roman Kostomarov, the 2006 ladies and men’s champion in the pairs discipline. An immunologist noted that his life is no longer in immediate danger, though the path to recovery will involve psychological adjustment and ongoing medical observation. The doctor emphasized that Kostomarov’s condition remains stable, and while the prognosis includes a challenging rehabilitation, the overall trajectory is positive from a clinical standpoint.
After a long period of hospitalization, Kostomarov reached a milestone by posting a message on social media on May 8, his first public note since January. In that message, he extended gratitude to fans, family, friends, and medical teams for their support during the healing process, underscoring the crucial role of caregivers in his recovery journey.
Earlier, on January 10, Kostomarov was admitted to the hospital with serious respiratory illness. He was moved to an intensive care unit due to pneumonia and required ventilatory support as part of the initial treatment approach. The medical team continued to monitor and adjust his care to stabilize vital functions and address the infection promptly.
Subsequently, Kostomarov was relocated to a specialized facility in Kommunarka where he received advanced life support, including ECMO assistance. Reports at the time indicated that the course of treatment involved multiple surgical interventions. These procedures were undertaken to manage the disease’s complications and to preserve as much function as possible during the recovery process.
